Does Accumulation of the Bromide from Pb Produce Bromism?

چکیده
Intake of excessive bromide can induce a condition termed bromism, with neurological, psychiatric, dermatological, and possibly endocrine effects. It has been suggested that intake of PB by PGW veterans may have induced symptoms of bromism, which may account for some illnesses in PGW veterans (Allan, 1997). This chapter evaluates the evidence for this hypothesis, briefly reviewing the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and mechanism of bromism and the possible relationship of illnesses in PGW veterans to bromism from PB ingestion.

Neuropsychiatric manifestations of bromide ingestion.
Bromides were formerly used for their sedative and anti-convulsant properties. The neuropsychiatric features of bromide intoxication have been recognized for many years (Barbour, Pilkington and Sargent, 1936). Carney (1971) described 5 cases of bromism and advocated stricter control on bromide preparations. Part III of the Medicine Act (1978) made potassium bromide available only by prescriptio...
متن کاملPb and Cd accumulation in Avicennia marina from Qeshm Island,
The accumulation of heavy metals Pb and Cd in the mangrove, Avicennia marina, was studied on the southern coast of Iran, particularly on and near Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. The samples were collected from 7 stations which they were analyzed by flame Atomic absorption spectrophotometer after chemical digestion. Maximum Pb and Cd in leaves are (34.50, 3.52 ppm) and minimum of th...

Kenneth W Moles, Wards 8/14, Belfast City Hospital, Lisburn Road, Belfast BROMIDE toxicity, though once fairly common, is now rarely encountered or considered. Though overall numbers are small, reports continue to appear from time to time1-3. A review from the John Hopkins Hospital described only 22 cases between 1952 and 19754. Perkins in Boston reported 27 cases in 17 years5. Over the past te...
